The Reality of ACL Rehab

We are committed to getting you back to sport safely and achieving pre-injury levels. Like any other injury, the risk of re-rupturing the ACL when returning to sport is real.

Below you will find the research’s most recent statistics on re-rupturing after making a full return to the playing field.  

  1. Approximately 1 in 4 patients who are 25 years of age or younger and return to high-risk sport (eg, soccer and team handball) after primary ACL reconstruction sustain a second ACL injury on the same or opposite leg.
  2. Athletes who had returned to knee-strenuous sports before 9 months after reconstruction had an approximate 7-fold higher rate of second ACL injury compared with those who returned at 9 months or later
  3. Many athletes fail their return-to-sport testing: Only 21% of patients who had completed rehabilitation and 5% of patients who had not completed rehabilitation, passed the return to sport tests 
  4. 24% of young athletes who re-ruptured a second time will rupture an ACL a third time.

MOBILITY and REBUILD PHASE

The focus is on reducing pain and swelling, regaining range of motion, and regaining control of the all important quadriceps muscles.

This phase focuses on optimizing pain-free mobility, overall upper and lower body strength, introduction to aerobic training, and independence with every-day tasks.

Month 4-6

MAXIMIZE STRENGTH and STABILITY

Continued emphasis on higher level strengthening and stability of the muscles that support the knee while introducing demands of the sport. 

Strengthening focuses on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. We will push you to be the strongest version of yourself in the squat, deadlift, and single joint exercises.

OPTIMIZING PREVENTION and RUNNING

In this phase our goal is to get you back to running and minimize the risk of re-injury. We do this by targeting the quadriceps.

The quadriceps is the most important muscle for ACL support and knee stabilization during walking, jogging, and running. We promise to get you back to running after passing a battery of objective tests supported by the literature.

Month 6-9

CONFIDENCE

Confidence is KEY and psychological readiness may arguably be the most important aspect of rehabilitation. This can make or break performance. 

Our team works with you to carefully construct a plan that gets you back on the field confidently.

RETURN TO SPORT PHASE

The focus shifts to more advanced strengthening and movements that mimic the demands of sport, such as plyometrics, agility drills, and sport-specific simulation. 

After passing a battery of intense strength, stability, and plyometric testing that is supported by the literature, you will be back on the field, or court, playing the sport you love.
